OKFSC offers tailor-made policy solutions aimed to reduce the costs and administrative burden of certification. These include the Forest Management (FM) Groups Standard, where management units can form groups and share the costs and administration. Additionally, FSC has a Continuous Improvement Procedure for small-scale, low intensity and community forests which reduces the number of audits based on performance. The Continuous Improvement Procedure also proposes a lighter internal monitoring system based on risk (i.e., looking only at active management units) to reduce the overall cost of certification.
Small and low intensity forest and community indicators to be added to Forest Stewardship Standards (FSC’s national standards)
Regional Forest Stewardship Standards for Asia Pacific only for smallholders with significantly less indicators
Continuous Improvement Procedure where users conform with a subset of criteria but agree to a five-year action plan towards full conformity
FSC works with local teams and partners on the group to support with capacity building. FSC also offers e-training programs available online.
FSC is working with like-minded partners and local FSC teams to address the limited enabling conditions on the ground. The intention is to support community and family forests to access markets, local or domestic, valuing sustainability. This is done through the use of the Collective Impact methodology where actors work together to address challenges and reach a common goal.

We recommend that they look for a group to join their group scheme or establish one themselves to improve internal governance practices. We would also encourage them to explore the Continuous Improvement Procedure to follow a stepwise approach towards certification.
